Before we get into the juiciness of this topic, what exactly does it mean to be yourself in sales?

What Does It Mean To Be Yourself In Sales?

Being yourself in sales is being the person you are without putting up a front or pretending to be someone else.

It’s being authentic, honest, and transparent in your actions.

It’s easy to ask yourself what would “so and so” do, or how would they react in this situation? But when you can put that aside and say and respond to your instinct and personality, you will learn how to be yourself in sales.

The ability to learn how to be yourself in sales is an important life skill that will allow you to succeed and build deeper relationships with others.

Now that we know what it means to be yourself in sales, let’s get into a few techniques that will help you become more comfortable being your usual self.

Three Techniques On How To Become Yourself In Sales

If you want something, you have to be willing to give up something else in return. These strategies aim to take yourself to one extreme of your personality so that being yourself becomes normal.

If you work in an office with other sales reps and want to know how to become yourself in sales, here’s what to do.

1) Talk like your favorite WWE Wrestler out loud.

Yes, you may look like a fool! A funny fool. But by doing this, once it’s time to be yourself, it becomes normal compared to acting like a hyped maniac looking to hit someone over the head with a chair.

You can act this out with a colleague at the start of your day or before you begin making your sales presentations to help loosen you up.

2) Act like a rap artist.

Shoot a freestyle! In other words, rap and say anything you can think of from the top of your head. Who cares if you suck. That’s the point of this exercise.

3) Yell out your sales presentation.

Have a colleague on one side of the office while you stand on the other and yell your entire sales pitch in front of everyone.

So how do you become yourself in sales?

Bringing so much hyper and crazy attention to yourself will allow you to feel normal when you finally need to be yourself.

When it’s time to be your natural self, it won’t feel as daring to do and say certain things because it’s nothing compared to making a fool of yourself, like the three exercises we just discussed.

By doing this, you’re taking your personality to one extreme, so when it’s time to be yourself, you don’t think twice about it.

Advantages Of Being Yourself in Sales

  • You won’t fear worrying about how you sound in front of your co-workers while making sales presentations.
  • Being yourself in sales will help you relax and be in the moment, allowing you to think more clearly and make better decisions.
  • You’ll get more enjoyment from working.
  • You will do great networking and attracting people to your natural personality.
  • You’ll build deeper relationships with your clients because they’ll be able to see that you’re a genuine person that they can trust.
  • It will be easier to get massive amounts of referrals because your clients will know that you’re not just in it for the quick sale, but that you actually care about them and their needs.
  • Most importantly, your sales numbers will increase because you’re the best version of yourself!

Disadvantages of NOT Being Yourself In Sales

  • When you’re trying to be someone you’re not, it puts a lot of unnecessary stress on your body and mind.
  • You won’t enjoy what you’re doing, and making sales will not be as simple as it should be.
  • You have to constantly think about what you’ll say or do next, which takes away from being present in the conversation. Hence, not being yourself.
  • People can see through BS from a mile away, so if you’re not being genuine with them, they’ll be able to tell, and it will cost you the deal.
  • Your sales numbers will suffer because you cannot build trust and rapport with your clients.

All in all, it’s just not worth it to try and be someone you’re not. It’s much easier (and more profitable) to be yourself!

Can You Follow Other Successful Salespeople And Still Be Yourself In Sales?

Learning how to be yourself in sales takes work and effort. In this process, it’s important to follow what other successful sales reps are doing rather than trying to re-invent the wheel.

You can still be yourself in sales while following other successful people. You should follow the structure in which they do things. Everything from their regimented work schedule to their sales process.

The only thing you are doing differently is being yourself. This means that the words you say in your sales presentations will be said only how you tell them.

You will fill it with your character and personality and add the special touch you can only do.

Conclusion

Once you learn how to become yourself in sales, you will feel good about yourself, and your sales numbers will dramatically increase. So make an effort to be yourself and see how it positively impacts your sales career!
